Born 1938 in Amsterdam, attending schools in Basel, universities in Basel, Bern and Zurich, Willem Stern became assistant at the Geochemical Laboratory at the Earth Science Department of Basel university in 1966, "Privat-Dozent" in 1973, Professor [tenure] in 1983, and head of the Geochemical Laboratory in 1991. He is emeritus (retired Professor) since 2002. Main topics in research and teaching have been analytical geochemistry [X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, thermal techniques], environmental and material science with a focus on non-destructive techniques and their application in forensics and archaeometry. Willem Stern is member of various scientific organisations and forensic expert, and author or co-author of over 120 scientific papers.
