Mrs Matlins, P.G., is a respected gemologist, author and lecturer. Her books are used worldwide by professionals and consumers alike. They include Jewelry & Gems: The Buying Guide; The Pearl Book; Gem Identification Made Easy; Colored Gemstones; Diamonds; and Jewelry & Gems At Auction. She is also the author of the Gemstones chapter of the Encyclopedia of Investments (Warren, Gorham & Lamont). Gemology editor of National Jeweler for almost a decade, her articles and comments appear in many national and international consumer and trade publications.
Trained since childhood by her late father and co-author, Antonio Bonanno, one of America’s most revered gemologists, she has gained wide recognition as a dedicated consumer advocate. Ms. Matlins spearheaded the nationwide campaign against gemstone investment telemarketing scams. A popular media guest, she is seen on the ABC, CBS, and NBC networks, as well as CNN and CNBC, providing education and exposing fraud. Ms. Matlins has also served as an Expert Witness for the US Attorney General’s office and in other lawsuits related to fraud.
She is educator for the retail trade, and provides innovative, practical, and non-technical educational programs at many gem shows and events in the USA, demonstrating simple techniques for identifying gemstones, treatments, and synthetics. She is one of very few women ever invited to address the prestigious London Diamond Dealers Club and Bourse, and the Israel Diamond Exchange. She has also served on the faculty of the Smithsonian Institution “Campus on the Mall” series, the Jewelers of America “Michael D. Roman Center for Business Studies,” and the Antique and Period Jewelry and Gemstone Institute.
