Eric has recently joined the Birmingham Assay Office as Director of AnchorCert London. Eric has a world wide reputation in the gem and jewellery industry through his many years of work at the London Precious Stone Laboratory and the Gem Testing Laboratory and his teaching of Gem Courses at the Sir John Cass College (part of London Metropolitan University). He came into gemmology almost by accident after gaining his degree in natural sciences. Applying for a job requiring an understanding of spectrohotometers and microscopes, Eric suddenly found himself working in a diamond laboratory and, like so many people in the trade, once he was in he was hooked! He started studying for his FGA almost immediately and has never looked back. Experience at the London Gem Testing Laboratory under the professional eye of director Alan Farn inspired Eric to discover coloured stones and pearls and from then his experience and knowledge has continued to expand. His experience in Diamond Grading is unrivalled; in 1980 he established the CIBJO diamond grading service at the Gem Testing Laboratory and in 1989 he organised and directed the GIA diamond grading report service in London. He has taught practical Diamond Grading skills throughout the UK, in Hong Kong and mainland China. Erics knowledge is renowned worldwide and he has given gem lectures in the UK, Europe, the Far East and the United States. During his career he has been privileged to examine some of the most famous and historic diamonds, natural pearls and coloured stones in the world.
